Siam Country Club Old Course is probably the most famous golf course in Thailand and since it first opened in 1970, when it was one of the first golf courses to open in Thailand, it has been extensively redesigned.
The Old Course was closed in 2006 and the renowned design team of Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley were engaged to modernize the course and make it suitable to host major championships. The basic layout was kept more or less the same although the the greens and fairways were re-laid, and many new water hazards and bunkers were added.
Since the re-design the Old Course has hosted a number of major tournaments including the LPGA Honda Classic and you will often find the course appearing on various listings of the best golf courses in Asia and sometimes in the world. What really sets the old course apart from some of the newer courses are the mature trees shrubs and plants that cover the course which gives it the look and feel of some of the traditional English courses.
The course has been laid out in a very traditional out and back design and you’ll need to negotiate numerous lakes and cleverly placed creeks. In order to score well it’s very important that you keep on the fairway as you can easily get blocked out by some of the overhanging trees. The greens at Siam Country Club Old Course are quite large with plenty of undulations and at times subtle borrows which can be very challenging as they are also very quick.
The course reserves the best or should we say the most challenging until the end as the closing three holes can really ruin your day. The 18th which is an uphill par-5 has ruined many rounds and is especially challenging if you get above the pin on the multi-level green because it’s very easy to putt back down hill and off the front of the green.
The clubhouse overlooks the course and all the structure itself is a little old it has been extensively modernized to provide all the top class facilities you would expect from one of the best golf courses in the region
