The Siam Country Club Plantation Course is without a doubt one of the best courses in Thailand which is why it has often been chosen to host the annual LGPA Honda classic. The course was designed by the renowned team of Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley who have been responsible for several iconic golf course designs in Thailand.
This is a 27-hole course and each of the three nines are quite different. The land on which the course was built used to be farmland growing tapioca and pineapple and two of the nines have been named in honor of this history. Throughout the course you will encounter some significant elevation changes and when you get to the top of the course you get some excellent views over the rolling countryside towards the Gulf of Siam and the skyscrapers of Pattaya City.
There’s no doubt that whichever combination of courses you play you’re in for a real challenge as this is a very difficult and long course playing at just over 7400 yards from the back tees. Many of the holes require a decent drive just to reach the fairway and anything slightly offline will disappear into one of the huge and at times deep bunkers. Many of the greens are particularly challenging as they’re like table tops with sharply sloping runoff areas which can leave you with some very challenging chips.
As you walk through the clubhouse and look out over the course you will be confronted by what looks like the largest green you’ve ever seen. It’s probably one of the largest greens to be found anywhere but it’s actually serving three holes: On one side is the green for the seventh hole on Tapioca on the other two sides are greens for the fourth and ninth holes on the Pineapple nine. This leads to some very interesting putts and if you take too much club you could end up on the wrong part of the massive green complex and be faced with a 50-yard putt.
Our favorite of the three nines is the Sugarcane Course which starts near the driving range and is particularly memorable for the spectacular fifth hole which is a Par-5 with more than 28 bunkers and to make life even more difficult it’s uphill all the way to the green
Facilities at Plantation are superb as we have come to expect from Siam Country Club Group with luxurious changing rooms, a top-class restaurant serving excellent Asian and Japanese food and extensive practice facilities. Carts aret compulsory here and you also have to stay on the cart paths so if you have difficulty walking and you need to request a flag which will allow you to go on the fairway
The clubhouse is ultra modern and they have very nice open air sitting areas for you to enjoy a beer while watching the sun come down over the course.
